Premier Cho Jung-tai thanked the Ministries of Culture, Transportation and Communications as well as local and overseas facilities which participated in the transformation of the former Taipei Railway Workshop into the National Railway Museum, integrating culture, history, industry and tourism.

Cho attended a ceremony marking the opening of the museum’s first phase, July 30 in Taipei City. Minister of Culture Lee Yuan, Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Shih-kai, Head of the National Railway Museum preparatory office Cheng Ming-chang, and Head of Saitama City-based Railway Museum Toru Ishida, were all present.

In his remarks, Cho noted that the architecture of the original railway workshop was retained together with equipment. He lauded a cooperative agreement signed between the NRM preparatory office and Japan’s RM and anticipated further bilateral exchange in collections, exhibitions and research, the Executive Yuan said.

Close to National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Taipei Dome and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, the 17-hectare TRW site was designated as a national historic site in 2015 and work to revitalize the site was initiated in 2016. After nine years of restoration work, the first phase of the museum is set to open to the public July 31.

The first six areas open to visitors include the diesel-electric locomotive workshop where 24 retired locomotives are on display, a bathhouse and the main office building. At the weekend, short rides on a restored diesel train will be available. (POC-E)
