NPM holds joint exhibition with French counterparts

The National Palace Museum and France’s Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris and Van Cleef & Arpels have teamed up to hold the “Beauty Speaks for Itself” exhibition as part of the Taiwan facility’s upcoming centennial celebrations.

According to the NPM, the exhibit will showcase over 260 pieces of exquisite artwork at its northern branch in Taipei City from Sept. 26 to Dec. 29 and its southern branch in Chiayi County from Jan. 23 to April 20, 2025. The title is inspired by a quote from Chinese ancient philosopher Zhuangzi on the natural beauty and order in the universe that speaks without words.

During a promotional news conference Sept. 19, NPM Director Hsiao Tsung-huang, Administrative-affairs Deputy Director Huang Yung-tai and General-affairs Deputy Director Yu Pei-chin welcomed the exhibition’s curatorial team, including Béatrice Quette, curator of the Museum of Decorative Arts’ Asian collection, and Alexandrine Maviel-Sonet, Van Cleef & Arpels’ patrimony and exhibitions director.

Hsiao voiced his gratitude to the team for their dedication throughout the seven years of preparatory work and said the museum looks forward to offering audiences an unprecedented visual feast through the interdisciplinary dialogue of masterworks from the East and West ranging from ceramic, jade, glass, bronze, silver, gold and textile pieces to furniture, high jewelry and watches.

The NPM director also lauded the two French institutions for their meticulous lighting design and security planning, adding that the collaboration was edifying for NPM personnel. The museum hopes to hold many more such exchanges with counterparts around the globe, he concluded. (POC-E)
