PO, MOFA thank US, Japan for supporting cross-strait peace

HomeUpdatesPO, MOFA thank US, Japan for supporting cross-strait peace
The unwavering support for cross-strait peace and stability recently expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 20.

In a fact sheet released after the two leaders met March 19 in Washington, they committed to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of regional security and global prosperity, supported the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues through dialogue, and opposed any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo, including by force or coercion.

According to the PO, Taiwan holds a positive attitude to strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance and attaches great importance to Indo-Pacific security. The reiteration of the importance of maintenance of cross-strait peace and stability demonstrates that this holds a strong consensus in the international community.

The Taiwanese government will continue to uphold the principle that only strength can achieve peace, the PO said. The country will strengthen self-defense capabilities and whole-of-society defense resilience while deepening cooperation with like-minded partners to safeguard rules-based international order and secure regional peace, stability and prosperity, the office added.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung also expressed appreciation for the two leaders’ continued support following their meeting last February, the MOFA said. The ministry urged countries worldwide to monitor the cross-strait situation, adding that Taiwan is a key in the defense of the first-island chain and also a hub for global economic growth, thus will continue to work with partners like the U.S. and Japan to maintain the status quo.
