Premier Cho delivers report card on 1st anniversary

Premier Cho Jung-tai held a news conference May 16 in Taipei City to detail progress on the implementation of major policy measures ahead of the first anniversary of the Active and Innovative Cabinet.

According to Cho, the Cabinet has striven for progress and balance amid confrontation and turbulences since its members took office following President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration May 20, 2024. The Cabinet has consistently called for cross-party cooperation to promote social stability and build a stronger Taiwan, he added.

The premier said nearly NT$30 billion (US$993 million) has been spent on disaster recovery and reconstruction in Hualien following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck the eastern county in April of last year. Resources will continue to be dedicated to restoring the region and its economy, he added.

Equally important, Cho said noticeable progress has been made in preventing scams, as evidenced by more than NT$12.9 billion in reported fraud prevention. He added that there has been an improvement in pedestrian safety with a 25 percent reduction in related incidents, and stated that the goal is to reduce the pedestrian death rate by 50 percent by 2030 compared to the 2023 level.

Cho said Taiwan’s economy improved 4.59 percent in 2024 and the gross domestic product per capita reached US$33,983. The government’s goals for 2028 include reaching a GDP per capita of US$40,000, an unemployment rate under 3 percent and a consumer price index steady at 2 percent.

Other key measures promote artificial intelligence and micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as the expansion of public childcare subsidies and parental leave. The launch of the Ministry of Sports on Sept. 9 along with seven other projects on asset management, housing and rental subsidies, long-term care, energy supply stability, national security, regional development, and technology development round out the Cabinet’s aims.

Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun also shared the status of Taiwan-U.S. tariff negotiations, saying the two sides held their first meeting via videoconference on April 11, and met in person in late April in Washington, D.C. She added that the government’s roadmap is to promote trade balance with the U.S. and create a high-tech strategic partnership to benefit industries in both countries. (SFC-E)
