President Lai Ching-te said March 16 that Taiwan is committed to leveraging the combined advantages of democracy, economics, and technology with like-minded partners to build more resilient supply chains and collectively support and expand peace and prosperity.
Lai made the remarks at the 9th Yushan Forum in Taipei City. Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taiwan Asia Exchange Foundation, the two-day event drew global political and economic leaders from 22 countries, including former Poland President Lech Wałęsa and former Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry.
In keeping with this year’s theme of “Indo-Pacific Partnership Prospects: Taiwan’s Values, Technology, and Resilience,” Lai said Taiwan will continue to deepen its partnerships with New Southbound and other Indo-Pacific nations, as well as democracies worldwide to foster a prosperous future.
Taiwan is committed to uniting democracies to shield like-minded nations from the threat posed by authoritarian expansion, the president said, adding that Taiwan has moved away from a reliance on the Chinese market. He noted that investment by Taiwanese enterprises in EU countries has jumped by 650 percent over the past decade, with exports to the U.S. growing by 78 percent last year, making the U.S. Taiwan’s largest export market. These figures reflect Taiwan’s efforts to diversify its markets and deepen international trade relations.
As home to world-leading advanced semiconductor manufacturing and solid IC design capability, Taiwan plays a major role in building global non-red supply chains for semiconductors and leading the way in international tech development, Lai said.
The president went on to say that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are essential for global security and prosperity. He pledged to work alongside fellow democracies to achieve the above aims through unity. Lai also stated that Taiwan is willing to share its experience and make contributions to other countries.
The administration proposed a special defense budget and are expanding defense spending to 3.32 percent of gross domestic product this year, the president said, adding that it is also accelerating asymmetric defense capability and enhancing whole-of-society defense and resilience to respond to threats or challenges.
