President Lai Ching-te visited National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology March 27 in Taoyuan City to gain insight into the facility’s various research achievements.

Upon the president’s arrival at NCSIST, he attended a briefing on the T-Dome air defense system and received a report about enhancing military power that showcased the assembly procedures for the indigenous Hsiung Feng and Tien Kung missiles.

In his remarks, Lai said that Taiwan must reinforce economic resilience, civil defense and national defense capabilities to face threats from China, adding that NCSIST bears the responsibility of strengthening defense.

The president said that one of the main goals for the proposed eight-year special defense budget of NT$1.25 trillion (US$40 billion) is to enable defense autonomy. He said the goal could be reached through military procurement from overseas, R&D at NCSIST, and collaboration with the international community.

According to the PO, Secretary-General Wu Jau-shieh of the National Security Council, Defense Minister Wellington Koo and Li Shih-chiang, president of NCSIST, were also in attendance. (POC-E)
