HomeUpdatesPresident Lai congratulates Japan PM Sanae Takaichi
President Lai Ching-te offered his congratulations Feb. 18 to Sanae Takaichi, who was re-elected Japan’s 105th prime minister at a National Diet session held earlier that day.

Lai wished the new Takaichi administration every success and anticipated that Taiwan and Japan will enhance their friendship through working together to advance the well-being of their nations and jointly address regional challenges.

Takaichi has on multiple occasions expressed support for Taiwan at important international venues, the PO said, adding that Taiwan is committed to strengthening regional partnerships with Japan in areas spanning economy, disaster prevention, technological cooperation and trade. The two will also work together to contribute to realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the same day to convey Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung’s congratulations to Takaichi. The PM is a long-term supporter of Taiwan, the MOFA said, citing her decision to include Taiwan’s engagement in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the World Health Organization in the Liberal Democratic Party’s congressional election policies during her term as the LDP’s Policy Research Council chair.

Another statement was issued by the MOFA Feb. 20, welcoming reappointed Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu’s remarks emphasizing the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Since taking office last October, Takaichi’s cabinet has called on the international community to take note of the cross-strait issue by speaking on international platforms such as the 28th ASEAN-Japan Summit and the Japan-U.S. summit, the MOFA said. It added that Japan also directly conveyed concerns over regional security to China, noting that cross-strait peace and stability are closely linked to the prosperity and security of both Japan and the world.

The MOFA welcomed democracies to continue working together to counter authoritarian expansion, and urged countries worldwide to take action to safeguard cross-strait security. Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and whole-of-society resilience, while working closely with like-minded partners to ensure cross-strait and Indo-Pacific peace, stability and prosperity, the ministry added.
