President Lai gives send-off to overseas volunteer youth teams

President Lai Ching-te received Taiwan overseas volunteer youth teams at the Presidential Office June 17 in Taipei City, commending their commitment to promoting the country on the global stage.

According to Lai, the young people were selected from all corners of Taiwan, possess expertise in a wide range of disciplines and are committed to helping those in need. They will soon travel to remote areas in 18 countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Kenya, the Kingdom of Eswatini and Turkey, to offer services in medical care, education and ecological conservation, he added.

The president said when he was working as a doctor, he also took part in medical outreach missions. He thanked the young people for their outreach diplomacy, praising them as ambassadors for Taiwan.

Citing statistics from the Ministry of Education, Lai said the government sponsored 324 young volunteers in 27 teams for overseas missions in the winter break this year. The MOE is sponsoring 868 more youths in 86 groups this summer, in addition to 12 youths for overseas missions lasting for more than six months, he said, adding that they will have a presence in 25 countries on four continents.

Government support for youth is also reflected in the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative that encourages young people to broaden international horizons. By fostering global connections and making exchanges, the initiative empowers the youth to innovate and come up with initiatives across various industries.

Lai said more than 700 youths were selected this year under the four-year, NT$10 billion (US$337.6 million) project and he encouraged others to seize the opportunity. (SFC-E)
