President Lai Ching-te Dec. 22 thanked Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for supporting friendship with Taiwan and said the government looks forward to working with Japan to promote a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The president made the remarks at the Presidential Office in Taipei City while receiving a delegation of friends of Taiwan from the Japanese city of Hachioji in the greater Tokyo area. The group is led by Koichi Hagiuda, a member of the Japanese Diet and acting secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party.

According to Lai, since taking office the prime minister has reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait on various global platforms. Such support is sincerely appreciated by the people of Taiwan, he said.

The president expressed hope that the two sides will continue to enhance cooperation on economic security, high-tech industries, national strategy, regional cooperation and social resilience enhancement. He also urged all democracies to work in unity to safeguard freedom and democracy.

In response, Hagiuda said Taiwan and Japan are important partners who share universal values and enjoy close economic and people-to-people exchanges. It is hoped that the two sides will continue to deepen collaboration based on the existing robust foundation.

Hagiuda thanked the government for lifting restrictions on Japanese food imports last month, as the decision will have a huge positive impact on ongoing reconstruction in Fukushima.

He cited the semiconductor fabrication plants set up by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in Kumamoto as a shining example of fruitful industrial cooperation, and expected to see more such partnership in sectors such as artificial intelligence and information communications technology.
