President Lai Ching-te said Nov. 6 that the government is committed to advancing the Taiwan-Japan relationship while strengthening the country’s overall competitiveness to contribute more to regional peace and prosperity.

Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation of All Japan Taiwanese Union members at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He praised the union, which was established in 2017, for mobilizing Taiwanese expatriates to promote the country through cultural, educational and charitable efforts.

According to the president, Taiwan and Japan have long supported each other, as evidenced by reciprocal assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and Japanese volunteers who helped clean up debris following the Fata’an Creek barrier lake disaster in Hualien County, as well as a submersible water-level observation buoy provided by Japan to offer early warning of further flooding.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s establishment of a foundry in Kumamoto prefecture also reflects strengthened industrial cooperation, Lai said. He added that the government looks forward to working with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s new administration on trade, security, technology, digital transformation and green energy.

To address concerns raised by the AJTU, Lai elaborated on Taiwan’s latest national development policies. The government is developing key technologies such as quantum technology, silicon photons and robotics and promoting the Ten AI Initiatives to help industries roll out artificial intelligence applications, he said, adding that the inclusion of the biomedical sector in the National Project of Hope will also spur industrial growth.

The president concluded by expressing his hope of ongoing support from Taiwanese expatriates and extended appreciation to AJTU members for their work to deepen Taiwan-Japan friendship. (YCH-E)
