President Lai receives EP delegation

President Lai Ching-te said Taiwan looks forward to an even closer relationship and diversified cooperation with the European Union to contribute to global prosperity and development.

The president made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the European Parliament. Visiting Taiwan May 25-30, the group comprises MEP Reinis Pozņaks and Beatrice Timgren, as well as Jens Vornøe, an EP policy advisor.

Lai thanked the EP for adopting resolutions last month to reaffirm the EU’s steadfast commitment to maintaining the cross-strait status quo, as well as its condemning China’s ongoing military provocations against Taiwan and call on the EU to strengthen economic, trade and investment ties with Taiwan.

The president said the EU and Taiwan are highly complementary in the fields of semiconductors, artificial intelligence and green energy, and hoped to see the two sides work together to build more resilient supply chains for democracies worldwide.

Looking ahead, Lai hoped to see the two MEPs continue advocating in the EP for the signing of a Taiwan-EU economic partnership agreement to consolidate economic security and boost international competitiveness for both sides.

In response, Pozņaks said coming from the small country of Latvia, he clearly understands how the people in Taiwan feel, adding that it is imperative to protect a world where the rule of law prevails. It is very crucial for all democracies to work in unity to protect freedoms, values and democracy, he said.

Timgren of Sweden said her visit underscores the values shared by Europe and Taiwan. She added that it is important that democratic countries maintain good relationships and solidarity, because a part of defense is solidarity.

The group also met with Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung the previous day to discuss issues such as global democratic alliance against expanding authoritarianism, Taiwan-EU trade relations and cultural exchanges. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit reflects the EP’s strong support for Taiwan, adding that the government will continue to deepen ties with the EP to defend peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
