President Lai receives European Parliament’s EUDS delegation

UpdatesPresident Lai receives European Parliament’s EUDS delegation
President Lai Ching-te said July 22 that Taiwan is committed to protecting democracy, peace and prosperity worldwide while sharing experiences with Europe to foster more resilient societies.

Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS) at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group was led by committee chair Nathalie Loiseau.

The president welcomed the delegation’s visit as a demonstration of the close ties between Taiwan and Europe, describing the EUDS’ aims as the strengthening of societal resilience and the countering of disinformation and hybrid threats. He noted that Taiwan and the EU have both been subjected to information manipulation and infiltration by foreign forces.

According to Lai, Taiwan not only faces an onslaught of disinformation but also is the target of gray zone aggression. The Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee was established to bolster overall security and strengthen the country’s resistance to new forms of threat, he said, adding that the people of Taiwan believe that a united society united by mutual trust can withstand authoritarian aggression.

The president further expressed Taiwan’s wish to deepen cooperation with Europe in such fields as cybersecurity and media literacy.

In response, Loiseau suggested that since Taiwan and the EU enjoy strong cultural, investment and trade relations, they should work together more closely and more often to face threats. She also reaffirmed that the EP will continue to strongly support Taiwan-EU relations.

The audience was preceded by a luncheon hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu for the delegation July 21, as well as a meeting with Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung later the same day. Lin took the opportunity to express appreciation for the EP’s continued support of Taiwan by passing resolutions and issuing reports, and welcomed expanded collaboration with the EU through mechanisms such as the Global Cooperation and Training Framework.
