President Lai Ching-te said March 4 that Taiwan is committed to deepening friendship and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation with Japan across the board.
Lai made the remarks while receiving Akiko Santō, former president of Japan’s House of Councillors, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He thanked Santō for her long-standing work to facilitate Taiwan-friendly resolutions, promote bilateral legislative exchanges and advance Taiwan-Japan relations.
Taiwan and Japan share the universal values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights and the rule of law, Lai said, adding that both partners have faces regional security challenges such as authoritarian expansion, gray zone tactics and cognitive warfare in recent years. The president went on to thank Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for stressing the importance of cross-strait peace and stability on multiple global occasions since taking office last year, adding that he believes Takaichi’s second Cabinet will contribute even more to peace in the Indo-Pacific.
According to Lai, Takaichi and Lin Hsin-i, Lai’s special envoy to the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Meeting, reached a consensus on strengthening bilateral collaboration in key technological fields last year. The cooperation will capitalize on the two sides’ respective strengths, with Taiwan leveraging its position as a global artificial intelligence and semiconductor hub and Japan leveraging its prowess in materials, equipment and precision manufacturing, he said.
In response, Santō reaffirmed that the friendship between Taiwan and Japan remains unchanged regardless of shifting global dynamics and thanked Taiwan for its assistance whenever Japan experiences a disaster. The former legislative president added that she brought 40 female delegates on the current visit to promote traditional Japanese culture and learn more about Taiwan’s history and culture and pledged to continue bolstering bilateral exchanges.
