President Lai Ching-te said March 17 that Taiwan is committed to working with like-minded partners to safeguard regional peace and stability while promoting prosperity and development throughout the world.
Lai made the remarks while receiving former Polish President Lech Wałęsa at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He expressed his admiration for Wałęsa as a Nobel laureate and the first democratically elected president of Poland after the country’s democratization.
Taiwan and Poland share similar experience in moving from authoritarian rule to democracy, Lai said, adding that both countries understand that safeguarding democracy is an ongoing task passed from generation to generation.
The president said that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election, and just after it was completed, Wałęsa visited Taiwan for the first time and delivered a speech in the Legislative Yuan to provide support and encouragement to the Taiwanese people. He added that Wałęsa has visited Taiwan many times over the intervening years to witness the process of Taiwan’s democratization.
Lai also said Taiwan is determined to continue acting as a force for good. In the face of such challenges as rapid geopolitical changes and gray zone intrusions, like-minded countries must work together toward regional peace and the promotion of world prosperity, he said, adding that Taiwan will continue to cooperate with Poland on democratic defense, social resilience and supply chain security, as well as the development of economy, trade and technology.
Wałęsa said in response that countries in the current era should jointly pursue peace and prosperity through continued dialogue and exchanges, and he also mentioned that he has repeatedly called on China not to take improper actions against Taiwan. The former president stated that he would continue to stand with Taiwan and stressed that Taiwan’s future should be decided by the Taiwanese people. (YCH-E)
