President Lai receives Guam governor

President Lai Ching-te said May 27 that Taiwan is committed to exploring more collaboration opportunities with Guam to further advance bilateral development.

Lai made the remarks while meeting with Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

According to the president, the visit marks the governor’s first official trip to Taiwan, demonstrating the Guam government’s support and high regard for the country. Taiwan and Guam share Austronesian culture and spirit, he said, adding that both also face similar challenges including climate change and regional security.

The two sides’ wide-ranging, mutually beneficial collaboration has been very fruitful, Lai said, citing the direct flights between Taipei and Guam launched by U.S.-headquartered United Airlines last month and referral services offered by domestic hospitals to patients from Guam. He proposed that Taiwan and Guam explore more cooperation opportunities in areas spanning aquaculture, food processing, hydroculture, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and recycling in addition to existing bilateral tourism promotion.

The president went on to say that Guam is the closest U.S. territory to Taiwan and an important bridge for collaboration with the North American country. He added that Taiwan will continue strengthening ties with the U.S. and combining strengths to maintain regional peace, stability and prosperity.

In response, Guerrero praised Taiwan’s quality of life advancements and economic stability. One of the aims of her current trip is to boost tourism, she said, adding that her administration is prepared to provide incentives and reduce fees to encourage more Taiwan airlines to establish permanent flight schedules to Guam.

The governor concluded by expressing her hope of building a stronger bilateral relationship in culture, marketing, tourism and other social and economic fields, as well as in upholding freedom and democracy. (YCH-E)
