President Lai Ching-te noted the expansion of cooperation with Japan and said he hoped to see the two countries collaborating on further contributions to regional economic development.
Lai made the remarks while welcoming Seishiro Eto, chair of and leader of a delegation from the Tokyo-based Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association, March 24 in Taipei City, the Presidential Office said.
The president noted that under Eto’s long-term leadership, the association has facilitated bilateral exchanges across the board, calling the JTFA’s donations and reconstruction assistance following the Hualien earthquake of April 3, 2024 an important part of the foundation on which the two countries’ robust bilateral collaborations in disaster response and building societal resilience are built.
Lai also expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for stressing the importance of cross-strait peace in multiple international contexts, including a fact sheet issued after March 19’s meeting between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and President Donald Trump, in which the two leaders reiterated their commitment to maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Lai further stated that Taiwan and Japan have established a close cooperative model in key industrial areas including artificial intelligence and semiconductors. In terms of tourism, reciprocal visits last year passed 8.2 million, the president said, expecting the number would exceed 10 million in the future.
Faced with regional challenges, Taiwan has continued to reinforce self-defense capabilities while working closely with Japan and like-minded countries to advance prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, Lai said.
According to the PO, Eto said in response that he hoped to see more frequent exchanges between junior and senior high school students. He also pledged to support Taiwan’s participation in various international organizations including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, International Civil Aviation Organization, and World Health Organization.
