President Lai Ching-te received Takayuki Kobayashi, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives, at the Presidential Office June 25 in Taipei City, pledging to keep enhancing bilateral partnership to ensure economic security and sustained development in the Indo-Pacific.
According to the president, Taiwan and Japan are both part of the first island chain, and Japan’s prime ministers have repeatedly stressed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and voiced objection to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion.
Lai stressed that China’s efforts to establish a red supply chain pose a threat to global free trade and the development of the high-tech market. Taiwan is looking to work with democratic partners to build a trusted, resilient supply chain in response, he said, adding that the success of Taiwan-Japan cooperation in the semiconductor sector is anticipated to promote more international industrial tie-ups.
The president called on Japan to facilitate the signing of an economic partnership agreement with Taiwan to further deepen bilateral trade and investment, and expressed hope that Japan would support Taiwan’s bid to take part in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
In response, Kobayashi said his visit reflects the strong bond between Japan and Taiwan, adding that the two sides not only share a deep historical connection, but also enjoy robust economic, people-to-people and strategic links.
As Japan’s former minister of state for economic security, Kobayashi said he fully understands the importance of economic security to national interests. He added that he looks forward to exchanging views on ways to promote a global democratic supply chain during the visit. (SFC-E)
