President Lai Ching-te said Aug. 18 that Taiwan is committed to strengthening mutual economic resilience with Japan while deepening bilateral cooperation to maintain regional stability.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation of the Youth Division of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Led by the division’s director Yasutaka Nakasone, who is also a member of the Japanese House of Representatives, the group includes LDP youth members and legislators..
The president first thanked Japan for steadfast support in difficult times, citing condolences conveyed by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and legislators in the wake of typhoons and heavy rains over the past two months. Both countries value freedom and democracy, he added, further expressing appreciation to Ishiba and his predecessors for continuing to stress the importance of cross-strait peace and stability at international gatherings such as the G7 Leaders’ Summit and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue.
Lai concluded by reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to working with Japan amid shifting geopolitical changes and to deepening collaboration in the fields of artificial intelligence, military, security control, semiconductors and next-generation communications.
Nakasone agreed with Lai’s sentiments and said bilateral cooperation in technological fields will boost mutual industrial competitiveness. He also shared that a disaster prevention agency will be established next year in Japan, adding that he hopes the new agency will facilitate the sharing of experiences and relevant information.
According to Nakasone, Taiwan is facing tensions across the Taiwan Strait, while Japan faces threats from China, Russia and North Korea. Both sides must show their determination to safeguard their own countries and establish response mechanisms, he said, adding that the younger generation plays a key role in the partners’ collaboration to counter such challenges.
