President Lai Ching-te received Keiji Furuya, chair of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council, at the Presidential Office March 16 in Taipei City and expressed hope of expanding bilateral cooperation in key industries.
Lai thanked Furuya for his long-standing leadership as head of the council, promoting bilateral parliamentary exchanges and speaking for Taiwan on a wide range of key issues. His contributions to two-way ties and regional peace and stability are immensely appreciated by the people, he added.
According to the president, China’s expanding authoritarian threats continue to jeopardize Taiwan and impose severe challenges to regional peace and stability. He thanked the Japanese government and Diet led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for attaching great importance to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait at multiple global venues.
Lai said Taiwan and Japan are key trade partners with highly complementary industries, citing milestone developments in the two sides’ semiconductor sectors. He anticipated that the two countries will keep deepening cooperation in strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, network security and energy to build a safe and dependable supply chain and enhance regional economic security and industrial resilience.
Taiwan and Japan recorded 8 million mutual tourist visits in 2025, Lai said, adding that he hoped to see the number top 10 million this year.
In response, Furuya said he believes that the president and the prime minister can work together to advance regional development given their shared policy objectives.
Citing as an example the investment in Japan by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Furuya said he expects the two sides to expand cooperation in next-generation sectors such as green energy, energy security and supply chain enhancement.
Given the increasingly daunting challenges across the Taiwan Strait, Furuya said Japan will continue to enhance cooperation with like-minded partners to safeguard Taiwan and its democracy and ensure cross-strait peace and security. (SFC-E)
