President Lai Ching-te said April 3 that the Taiwanese government is committed to deepening exchanges and cooperation with the U.S.-based Lions Clubs International to uphold kindness and justice and bring more positive energy to all segments of society.

Lai made the remarks while receiving the organization’s International President A.P. Singh at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He praised LCI’s efforts to extend compassion and support around the world, noting that they align with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and underscore the organization’s mission to promote human development and safeguard human rights.

The president thanked LCI for its long-standing support, citing the Lions Clubs International Foundation’s assistance following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Hualien County in 2024 and after a barrier lake on Matai’an Creek overflowed last year.

According to Lai, members of the Taiwan chapter have great influence in LCI. He said that local members donated over US$40 million to the LCI’s Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service fundraiser a few years ago, the largest contribution of any country. Taiwan also currently has the highest per capita donation by LCI members, the president said, adding that the Lions Clubs International Taiwan General Association was divided into five districts in 2023, demonstrating LCI’s emphasis on Taiwanese development.

Lai concluded by quoting Singh, who said, “We serve because we care; we lead because our community needs us.” He also thanked all members of the organization and urged Taiwanese Lions to show Singh the beauty of the country during his stay. (YCH-E)
