President Lai Ching-te expressed hope of working with Paraguay to safeguard democracy and freedom and jointly contribute to global peace and prosperity.
Lai made the remarks Oct. 8 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City while welcoming a 16-member delegation led by Raúl Luis Latorre Martínez, president of Paraguay’s Chamber of Deputies. Prominent attendees at the meeting included Rodrigo Daniel Gamarra Krayacich, chair of the chamber’s Taiwan friendship group, and the ally’s Ambassador to the ROC (Taiwan) Darío Filártiga Ruiz Díaz.
Lai first thanked the delegation for their long-standing support for Taiwan, noting that Latorre has spoken for Taiwan on multiple international occasions and the Congress of Paraguay has firmly backed Taiwan’s global participation. During the General Debate at this year’s U.N. General Assembly, President Santiago Peña also underscored the importance of admitting Taiwan to the body, Lai added.
Lai said that with the support of Paraguay’s government, the two sides have collaborated in a wide range of areas, including agriculture, animal husbandry, education, infrastructure, and women’s empowerment. Through these joint efforts, a medical information system has been introduced in more than 1,000 public health institutions across the allied nation, he added.
Lai also noted that the Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University has trained 174 outstanding young professionals, while the upgraded Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park will further boost bilateral industrial cooperation.
In response, Latorre said the visit is intended to send a clear message that Paraguay stands firmly with Taiwan and will continue to speak up for it on the international stage. He added that Paraguay has strengths in agriculture and clean energy, noting that its pork products are now exported to Taiwan tariff-free, and highlighted the country’s potential for developing its artificial intelligence industry.
