President Lai receives Somaliland delegation

UpdatesPresident Lai receives Somaliland delegation
President Lai Ching-te said July 24 that Taiwan will continue to deepen partnerships with Somaliland while advancing fruitful bilateral cooperation.

Lai made the remarks while meeting with a Somaliland delegation led by Abdirahman Dahir Adam, minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He was accompanied by Minister of the Presidency Khadar Hussein Abdi and other high-ranking officials.

Describing Somaliland as a beacon of democracy in the Horn of Africa, the president said that authoritarian regimes have continued to apply new forms of coercion as they intensify suppression of Taiwan’s and Somaliland’s international participation. He added that the two sides must continue to deepen two-way ties and demonstrate the resilience of democratic alliances, as well as staunch commitment to defending their values.

According to Lai, this year marks the fifth anniversary of the mutual establishment of representative offices. Taiwan and Somaliland continue to expand exchanges in various areas which have yielded fruitful results, he said, citing an agreement on coast guard cooperation set to be signed later the same day.

In addition to strengthening bilateral partnership, Lai expressed anticipation of working together with like-minded countries such as the U.S., and through trilateral or multilateral cooperation platforms, to realize the strategic goal of a non-red Somaliland coastline.

In response, Adam praised Taiwan as a peaceful nation and said that the two countries share democratic values. He reasserted Somaliland’s strong ties with Taiwan and thanked the Taiwan government for assistance offered to his home country. The minister concluded by welcoming Taiwan investment in Somaliland and urging cooperation in the fields of education and maritime security. (YCH-E)
