President Lai receives US congressional delegation

President Lai Ching-te said June 16 that Taiwan will continue to strengthen bilateral investment and industrial cooperation with the U.S. to jointly enhance economic and developmental resilience.

Lai made the remarks while meeting with a delegation led by Rep. Ami Bera, co-chair of the U.S. Congressional Taiwan Caucus. The group, drawn from members of the Foreign Affairs and Armed Services committees, comprises Reps. Gabe Amo, Wesley Bell, Julie Johnson, Sarah McBride and Johnny Olszewski.

Staunch bipartisan U.S. congressional backing of Taiwan is key to the steady advancement of the two sides’ relations, Lai said, expressing appreciation to visiting representatives for voicing support for Taiwan and continuing to focus on cross-strait peace and stability in Congress.

Taiwan is determined to safeguard peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the president said, citing both public-private cooperation to enhance the country’s whole-of-society defense resilience and the acceleration of national defense reforms. The government is working to ensure that Taiwan’s defense budget exceeds three percent of its GDP this year, he noted, adding that he hopes Taiwan-U.S. security cooperation will evolve into a joint research, development and production partnership.

Bilateral industrial exchanges are also going from strength to strength, Lai said, bringing up examples such as visits by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Economic Minister Kuo Jyh-huei to Texas to check in on artificial intelligence and semiconductor collaborations, as well as a delegation led by Executive Yuan Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin to attend the SelectUSA Investment Summit, all in last month.

Lai spoke favorably of pending legislation addressing Taiwan-U.S. double taxation and thanked Bera for co-leading a joint letter last November to call for such act. He said such a law would enhance economic resilience for both countries.

In response, Bera emphasized that it is incumbent upon democracies to uphold peace in Asia and reaffirmed the bipartisan support for the people of Taiwan in the Congress. (YCH-E)
