In response to the recent U.S. imposition of tariffs, President Lai Ching-te committed to seeking more favorable rates and to provide support for medium and small enterprises tackling the resulting challenges.
After the U.S. implemented a new tariff regime in April this year, four in-person and multiple online negotiations with the U.S. have been held, the Presidential Office stated.
Lai noted that although technical consultations with the U.S. have finished, as the final concluding meeting has not yet taken place, 20 percent has been set for Taiwan as an interim tariff rate. The president said that the country will work towards a more favorable and reasonable rate in subsequent negotiations and that the U.S. has expressed willingness to continue talks.
Lai noted that Taiwan industries will inevitably be impacted and expressed appreciation for Premier Cho Jung-tai’s proposal of a support plan for Taiwan’s export supply chain. The premier held over 20 industry consultation sessions and a special budget for industry support has been increased from NT$88 billion to NT$93 billion (US$ 3106 million).
Cho hosted a meeting with ministers and an Executive Yuan working group on the Taiwan-US. economy Aug. 1, in which he emphasized the importance of assisting industry to adapt to the tariffs. Measures the premier mentioned included expanding domestic demand. (POC-E)
