President Lai Ching-te expressed hope of continuing to work with St. Kitts and Nevis to jointly advance global prosperity.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Terrance Drew, the allied nation’s prime minister, Nov. 14 at the Presidential Office in the capital. Other delegates included Foreign Minister Denzil Douglas and Ambassador-at-Large Leon Natta-Nelson, the PO said.
According to Lai, under Drew’s leadership the two countries have continued to deepen their mutually beneficial partnership in agriculture, education, energy, medicine and women’s empowerment. During the visit, Drew signed a sister-city agreement between Basseterre and Taipei City and is expected to sign another with Tainan City, signaling the expansion of bilateral cooperation from the national to the local level, he added.
Lai also thanked Drew for urging the international community to support Taiwan’s global participation and reiterating the importance of cross-strait peace to global security during this year’s U.N. General Assembly.
In response, Drew said that the 40-plus years of bilateral ties are built on mutual respect, trust and shared goals. Since St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence, Taiwan has assisted the country with infrastructure development, technology advancement and talent cultivation, with several hundred students graduating from Taiwan’s top universities, he noted.
Drew added that Taiwan has also supported the country’s digital transition, food security and youth empowerment, pledging continued backing for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations such as the World Health Organization.
Following the meeting, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted a luncheon for the delegation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. (POC-E)
