President Lai Ching-te expressed hope for deeper economic and trade exchanges with the U.K. to advance industrial cooperation and mutual prosperity.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the British-Taiwanese All-Party Parliamentary Group led by Lord Rogan, a member of the House of Lords, March 31 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Matt Nottingham, head of cross-strait and regional security at the British Office Taipei, also attended the meeting, the PO said.
In his remarks, the president noted that cross-strait peace is closely related to regional security and supply chain resilience. He thanked the U.K. government and Parliament for opposing unilateral changes to the Taiwan Strait status quo and said Taiwan will continue to act as a responsible member of the international community in safeguarding regional stability.
Beyond security, Lai said Taiwan and the U.K. have strong potential to cooperate on economic resilience, green energy transition and technological innovation. He noted that the two sides signed an Enhanced Trade Partnership in 2023, Taiwan’s first structured bilateral economic framework with a European country, followed by three additional arrangements under the framework in 2025.
Lai also expressed hope that the U.K. will continue supporting Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, the PO added.
In response, Lord Rogan said he has witnessed Taiwan’s economic transformation from textiles to high technology, particularly semiconductors. He added that the delegation, comprising members from five parties across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, aims to demonstrate support from both the House of Lords and House of Commons, the PO said.
