President Tsai Ing-wen received a delegation led by Guatemalan Minister of Defense Henry Reyes at the Presidential Office Sept. 27 in Taipei City, pledging to expand the partnership across the board.
According to the president, Taiwan and Guatemala enjoy a deep friendship and close cooperation. The strong bilateral ties are evidenced by the reciprocal visits of her and President Alejandro Giammattei in April, military officer training exchanges and the launch of a Mandarin course to help Guatemalan military officers better understand Taiwan’s culture, she said.
Tsai added that Guatemala Amb. Oscar Adolfo Padilla and Col. Hermelindo Choz Soc, one of the visiting delegates, are both alumni of Taiwan’s National Defense University. The visit is expected to deepen defense cooperation and help the visitors gain insight into how Taiwan has developed its self-defense capabilities, she said.
The president also took the opportunity to thank the Central American ally for speaking out for Taiwan at numerous international venues and expressed her wish that the two governments would continue to support each other on the global stage.
In response, Reyes said he has been able to observe many aspects of daily life in Taiwan, and its people are very hard-working and dedicated to promoting peace. It is hoped that the two allies will continue to deepen their friendship going forward, he added. (SFC-E)
