SA launches guidelines for promoting sports for disabled people

The Ministry of Education’s Sports Administration issued guidance to promote sports for people with mental and physical disabilities Feb. 6 in Taipei City, highlighting government commitment to creating a friendly and inclusive sports environment while fostering equal participation for all.

The SA said that experiences and practices from home and abroad were incorporated into the guidelines, which are intended to advance the quality of services at various sporting events. The document provides general recommendations and execution details, ranging from barrier-free venue arrangements to transportation and assistive device support, it added.

The document offers specific suggestions and checklists for cycling, running and swimming, the administration said, adding that it also aligns with the aims of the National Sports Act and the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

According to chief editor Chiang I-tsun, professor in the Department of Special Education at the Taipei-based National Taiwan Normal University, the guidelines further realize two of the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals: reducing inequality, and promoting peace, justice and strong institutions.

SA Deputy Director-General Hung Chih-chang said during the launch ceremony that the guidance echoes the vision proposed by the International Paralympic Committee to make an inclusive world through sport, and pledged to achieve the goal of equal sporting rights for all. (YCH-E)
