Sports Minister Lee welcomes home Winter Olympics athletes

HomeUpdatesSports Minister Lee welcomes home Winter Olympics athletes
Minister of Sports Lee Yang pledged to continue improving support mechanisms and training resources to enable Taiwan’s athletes to compete even more effectively at winter sports events.

Lee made the remarks March 2 in Taipei City while receiving members of the national team, who had just returned from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The Ministry of Sports said that eight athletes competed in five sports at the Milan Cortina Games, including alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, bobsleigh, figure skating and speed skating.

The minister noted conditions and resources for training winter sports are comparatively limited due to Taiwan’s subtropical climate; as a result, athletes must undergo long-term overseas training and adjust to different environments. He thanked Team Taiwan athletes, coaches and support staff for their performance on the international stage.

The MOS said Team Taiwan’s showing was characterized by stable performance and multiple breakthroughs. Chen Ying-chu was ranked in women’s 500-meter speed skating, breaking the national record, while Sophia Tsu Velicer performed well in the women’s cross-country skiing 50 km Mass Start Classic.

The 2026 Games marked Taiwan’s first foray into Olympic bobsleigh, the ministry said. Lin Sin-rong entered the women’s single event, and joined with Lin Song-en to compete for gold in women’s two-seater races. (POC-E)
