The 2026 Yushan Forum concluded March 17 in Taipei City and spotlighted Taiwan’s vibrant democracy, freedom and openness.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a highlight of the second day’s agenda was the Roundtable Dialogue on Indo-Pacific Prospects, which focused on how Taiwan can promote shared prosperity amid geostrategic competition.

The event was moderated by Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi and involved Ashok Malik, former policy advisor and additional secretary of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs; Yim Sung-joon, former national security advisor of South Korea; and Lim Biow-chuan, former deputy speaker of the Parliament of Singapore, among others.

The former officials and think tank experts agreed that while geostrategic competition incurs risks, it also highlights the need for trusted partners. Including Taiwan as a cooperative partner in regional security, open markets and economic competition is essential to creating a secure and prosperous virtuous cycle, they added.

During the luncheon on the same day, Vice Minister Ger Bau-shuan summarized the points from the first day’s agenda and stressed that strengthening democratic supply chain resilience is “the best and only way” to counter authoritarian expansion.

In the keynote speech, Isa Kahraman, former chair of the National Defense Committee of the Netherlands’ House of Representatives, and Shaurya Doval, founder of the India Foundation, said economic resilience stems from technological innovation and encouraged their countries to expand semiconductor and AI supply chain cooperation with Taiwan.

The MOFA said President Lai Ching-te also received some of the invited guests at the Presidential Office and stressed the importance of the forum as a global platform to address challenges and brainstorm long-term solutions. Participants also expressed great interest in Taiwan’s long-term foreign policy strategies, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
