Four jazz musicians and a dance troupe from Taiwan fill the schedule at the George Town Festival 2025, set to kick off Aug. 2 in western Malaysia, the Ministry of Culture said July 30.
According to the MOC, the artists will stage four performances as part of the nine-day festival’s “Isle to Isle” program. Launched in 2019 by the festival’s organizers and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, the program is a key cultural and creative exchange platform connecting the vibrant islands of Taiwan and Penang.
The Stacey Wei Quartet will stage two performances of their show, “Three Generations, One Jazzy Heartbeat.” Formed exclusively for the 2025 festival, the intergenerational ensemble is led by trumpeter Stacy Wei and comprises legendary drummer Rich Huang, innovative pianist Guras Batu and rising double bassist Liu Yu-chia.
The day before the concert, Wei and Huang will be joined by renowned Malaysian jazz pianist Tay Cher Siang for “And All That Jazz: Stories of Malaysia and Taiwan” to share their personal experiences and reflect on jazz as a world of creativity, connection and common humanity. Huang will also demonstrate his jazz drumming artistry Aug. 4 as part of the festival’s masterclass series.
Taipei City-based contemporary dance company Hung Dance will stage two performances of “Birdy. ” The piece, choreographed by co-founder Lai Hung-chung, seamlessly blends tai chi with forms and imagery from traditional opera to explore the interaction of freedom and constraint at play when examining personal struggles in a broader societal context.
