Taiwan, Belize hold second ECA administrative committee meeting

UpdatesTaiwan, Belize hold second ECA administrative committee meeting
The second administrative committee meeting of the Taiwan-Belize Economic Cooperation Agreement took place July 29-30 in Taipei City, spotlighting government efforts to expand bilateral cooperation.

The event was co-hosted by Deputy Economic Minister Cynthia Kiang and Amalia Mai, CEO of Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Meetings of several technical committees were also held at the event, including those for investment promotion and cooperation, for rules on food security inspections and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and for addressing technical barriers to trade.

Kiang said Belize is a longstanding supporter of Taiwan’s international participation and the allies have a history of working closely in the fields of education, infrastructure, medical care, and the empowerment of women. She expressed hope that the ECA will facilitate continued mutually beneficial partnerships and advance the two sides’ competitiveness in global markets.

In response, Mai said Taiwan is a trustworthy friend of Belize and the allies’ relationship is built upon the shared values of democracy and mutual respect. She anticipated that the two countries will continue to deepen bilateral ties, as they have since official relations were established in 1989.

Since the ECA took effect Jan. 15, 2022, Belize’s exports to Taiwan have increased by more than 3.5 times compared with before the agreement came into effect, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said, adding that the ally is Taiwan’s fourth largest source of lobster. The MOEA took the opportunity to congratulate Belizean officials on reaching a zero-tariff agreement with Taiwan to export products like white shrimp.

The ministry further held an investment and trade promotion seminar July 29 in Taipei. The event was attended by around 100 domestic representatives from industry associations and businesses ranging from electronic information and seafood imports to shipping and tourism, the MOEA added. (YCH-E)
