Cabinet-level National Development Council Minister Liu Chin-ching led a delegation to Japan Aug. 16 to expand cooperative regional revitalization opportunities.

During the trip, Liu met with Riku Miyamoto, mayor of Kaga in Ishikawa prefecture. Miyamoto is known for being supportive of Taiwan and has achieved exceptional results in promoting local communities, according to the NDC.

At the meeting, Liu noted that the council is collaborating with 12 other ministries and agencies to promote local rejuvenation. He cited the successful example of Xincheng Township in the eastern county of Hualien, where a lemon-themed tourism corridor has stimulated the area’s economy.

In response, Miyamoto highlighted the ice cream theme embraced by the city’s Yamanaka Onsen district, which boasts over 40 ice cream shops that attract visitors from home and abroad, including former tennis champion Roger Federer. Kaga utilizes funding from civil groups to attract youth from around Japan to move to the city and set up businesses.

Liu said he hoped to invite representatives from Kaga’s public and private sectors to visit Taiwan to share their perspectives and for more youth from Taiwan to visit Japan to learn more about community renewal. He concluded with a pledge to continue strategic collaboration with Japan by expanding internship opportunities and encouraging more demographics to get involved in regional revitalization. (POC-E)
