Taiwan, Finland conclude trade talks in Helsinki

The eighth Taiwan-Finland Trade Talk wrapped up June 5 in Helsinki with both sides pledging to enhance their economic partnership across the board.

Convened by Ministry of Economic Affairs Deputy Minister Cynthia Kiang and Petri Peltonen, under-secretary of state at the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the one-day event covered topics spanning the circular economy, digital health care, quantum technology, renewable energy, satellites and telecommunications.

Kiang shared her thoughts about the economic outlook for Taiwan and the world while stressing the country’s importance in global supply chains during the event. She urged the two sides to explore more business opportunities by leveraging their complementary advantages: Taiwan’s strengths in the information and communications industry and Finland’s specialization in wireless communications with strong software research and development capabilities.

Peltonen agreed that there is great potential for cooperation between Taiwan and Finland in the communications sector, and further stressed the necessity of building reliable supply chains in the face of global economic and trade uncertainties.

Both Kiang and Peltonen attended the 12th Taiwan-Finland Joint Business Council Meeting held later the same day. The deputy minister said that as the partners pursue innovation and entrepreneurship, the government will continue to expand international cooperation to benefit enterprises on both sides.

While in Finland Kiang visited Finnish startup IQM Quantum Computers to learn about the company’s latest developments. She also stopped in at Nokia to better understand its latest 5G/6G telecommunications, internet infrastructure and cyber security solutions.

Statistics show that bilateral trade amounted to US$514 million in 2024, placing Finland as Taiwan’s third largest trading partner in Northern Europe. According to the MOEA, Finland’s investment in Taiwan as of March 2025 totaled US$5.92 million, while Taiwan’s reciprocal investment reached US$15.86 million. (YCH-E)
