Taiwan, Germany team up for Indigenous artifact exhibition cooperation

The National Taiwan Museum, Taipei City-based National Chengchi University and the Ethnological Museum of Berlin concluded a letter of intent in Taipei on a trilateral partnership in cultural artifact repatriation to promote Taiwan-Germany cultural exchanges.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the pact was signed by NTM Director Chen Teng-chin, EMB Director Lars-Christian Koch and Yao Shao-ji, director of the Research Center for Historical Sources in Europe Concerning Taiwan at NCCU.

During the signing ceremony, Chen expressed high hopes for trilateral cooperation under the agreement. Little research has been conducted on Taiwan’s Indigenous artifacts in museums in German-speaking countries, he said, adding that the LOI will help arrange for such historical items to be displayed back home. The NTM will also stage workshops later this year to deepen curation and research exchanges, he added.

Koch called the LOI an important milestone in Taiwan-Germany cultural exchanges. Citing challenges in preserving the EMB’s collections, he said Taiwan’s conservation expertise will be very valuable, adding that the project also aligns with the Berlin institution’s ongoing efforts to digitize its collections and expand global access.

Under the pact, a joint exhibition is planned for June 2027 in Taiwan that will feature Indigenous Taiwanese artifacts from the EMB. It will be the country’s first major exhibition of such items housed in Western museums, the ministry said.

The MOC said the Berlin museum holds around 450 Indigenous artifacts from Taiwan in its collections, most of which were obtained between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founding EMB Director Adolf Bastian also sent collectors to Taiwan during that period. (SFC-E)
