Taiwan holds global meeting on tackling transnational fraud

The Ministry of Justice collaborated with the Executive Yuan’s Anti-Money Laundering Office to stage a seminar on cross-border fraud and international cooperation in the digital era June 10-11 in Taipei City.

The event brought together academics, prosecutors and judicial police from 17 countries, including Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands, the U.S. and U.K. Discussions centered digital platform governance and technological investigations, the MOJ said, adding that experts in virtual currency investigations shared valuable experience and knowledge.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Justice Hsu Hsi-hsiang emphasized that addressing emerging forms of international crime requires information sharing, and expressed hope that the conference would strengthen the ability of the global judicial network to cooperate.

The ministry said that Lutz Güllner, head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan, shared how the European Union facilitated transnational cooperation through the Digital Services Act.

The MOJ also noted that Lin Ching-fu, director of the Institute of Law for Science and Technology at National Tsing Hua University in the northern city of Hsinchu, explained in a session on digital platform governance and international collaboration how the DSA reinforces platform liability and transparency.

In the session on fighting fraud and asset recovery, Minister without Portfolio Lin Ming-hsin hosted a discussion between experts from Korea’s Supreme Prosecutors’ Office and the Royal Thai Police exploring ways to deal with cyberfraud, money laundering and cryptocurrency, according to the MOJ.

The ministry said that persistent dialogues and joint efforts are key to forging an efficient digital management mechanism which safeguards human rights. (POC-E)
