President Lai Ching-te said Oct. 23 that the government is committed to working with all sectors to shape the Asia-Pacific into a global hub for the circular economy.
Lai made the remarks while attending the closing ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Circular Economy Roundtable and Hotspot in Taipei City. Organized by the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment and Economic Affairs, and the Taipei-based Circular Taiwan Network, the four-day event brought together over 500 participants from 50 countries.
The world is facing severe challenges such as climate change and resource shortages, and the circular economy is a solution to these issues, Lai said. He added that the event explored how concepts in the circular economy can be transformed into good business through clear governance, necessitating cooperation from countries worldwide.
According to the president, the scale of Taiwan’s green technology industry continues to grow, as evidenced by the industry’s added value exceeding NT$500 billion (US$16.2 billion) in 2024, accounting for 2 percent of the gross domestic product. Among all the sub-sectors in the green technology industry, the circular economy was placed top in added value, with an annual growth rate of nearly 10 percent, accounting for 30 percent of the green technology industry’s total added value, he said.
Lai further praised the country’s food and agriculture sector and the recycling mechanism, adding that Taiwan is willing to share its experience with the international community. Citing Taiwan’s draft Circular Economy Roadmap, he committed to promote the spirit of Taiwan Can Lead in the circular economy while vowing to continue collaboration with partners to make Asia Can Lead and contribute further to create a sustainable global future.
