Taiwan International Human Rights Film Festival begins in Taipei

The National Museum of Human Rights kicked off the 2024 Taiwan International Human Rights Film Festival Sept. 19 in Taipei City, highlighting the government’s dedication to advancing justice.

According to the NHRM, this year’s event features 10 films from around the world that address themes of bullying and historical justice, among others. Sideline events including seminars have also been arranged for attendees.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, MOC Minister Li Yuan called the directors and their crews social activists because of the deep and thoughtful attention they bring to bear on social problems such as human rights during war, and added that TIHRFF showcases the common values that Taiwan shares with the world.

Four pieces are being screened in the gender equality category, the NHRM said. Among them is director Ramona S. Diaz’s “And So It Begins,” a story of the 2022 presidential election in the Philippines that touches on disinformation and gender discrimination. The human rights category contains six films, including Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol,” which brings the audience to the front lines of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and demonstrates the difficulty of eradicating the hatred caused by wars.

The main festival is underway through Sept. 22 in Taipei City, after which it is set to run Sept. 26-29 in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City and Sept. 30 to Oct. 5 in the central city of Taichung, the MOC added.

Since its inception by the MOC’s National Human Rights Museum in 2017, the annual festival has served as a major platform for exchange and cooperation on various rights issues, the MOC said. (POC-E)
