Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming vowed to work with Japan to forge competitive green supply chains as the two countries undergo net-zero transitions.

Peng made the remarks while receiving a Japanese delegation led by Keiichiro Asao, member of the House of Councillors and former environment minister, Dec. 26 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Environment.

At the meeting Peng said Taiwan and Japan share values and are aligned on climate action and resource circulation, adding that Taiwan has seen considerable growth in the areas of circular economy and renewable energy, with related output reaching NT$512.3 billion (US$16.3 billion) in 2024.

In response, Asao lauded Taiwan’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and resource circulation. He said the two sides should further reinforce environmental governance ties through substantive economic, trade and technological cooperation.

The two sides agreed to strengthen coordination in chemical substance regulation and promote the signing of agreements on resource circulation and key rare earth elements.

Additionally, the two sides discussed potential collaboration in recycling discarded plastic automotive materials and electronic waste such as cell phones and computers, as well as carbon credit and climate adaptation pacts, the MOENV said.

Peng pledged to continue deepening cooperation with Japan and other like-minded countries to advance economic and environmental prosperity, the ministry concluded. (POC-E)
