UpdatesTaiwan, Japan stage university presidents’ forum in Kumamoto
The 2025 Taiwan-Japan University Presidents’ Forum took place July 16 in the Japanese city of Kumamoto, with the two sides discussing key challenges and exploring areas for expanded cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Education, the Taiwan delegation was led by Lee Yu-Jiuan, director-general of its Department of International and Cross-strait Education, and included senior administrators from 33 local tertiary institutions. The Japanese side involved representatives from 48 institutions.

During her remarks, Lee said Japan is a major source of foreign students for Taiwan, with 8,779 Japanese currently studying in the country, including more than 3,200 enrolled in Mandarin-learning programs. The event underscores the strong commitment of the two sides to deepening education exchanges, she added.

Themed “The Future of the Region: Challenges of Universities in Japan and Taiwan in the Innovative Era,” the forum included a keynote speech by Hideki Wakabayashi, distinguished professor of Kumamoto University, who said that given the semiconductor cooperation between Taiwan and the Kyushu island, personnel and education cooperation will help develop a regional semiconductor ecosystem.

The forum also featured two thematic sessions on student and young researcher exchange and industry-academia collaboration; two panel discussions on the role of universities for natural disasters and digital transformation in higher education; and a new seminar and exhibition on personnel cultivation.

Prior to the forum, Lee took part in a ceremony for the launch of a Mandarin language center the Kumamoto University set up by National Sun Yat-sen University based in Kaohsiung City, southern Taiwan.

The forum was launched in 2016 by the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan and the Japan Committee of Universities for International Exchange. The next edition of the biennial event will take place in Taiwan in 2027, the MOE said. (SFC-E)
