The annual science and technology cooperation conference between Taiwan, Latvia and Lithuania took place Oct. 23 in Riga, Latvia, to review the results of ongoing trilateral projects and select new research topics for the coming year.

According to the National Science and Technology Council, the conference was jointly convened by NSTC Deputy Minister Chen Bing-yu; Lauma Sīka, a deputy director at Latvia’s Ministry of Education and Science; and Laima Taparauskienė, a director at Lithuania’s Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.

Chen praised the partnership for sponsoring more than 80 projects since its launch over two decades ago, and called the annual conference an important venue for trilateral discussion of policies and developments. According to the NSTC, the three countries signed a cooperative pact in 2000 that set up a fund to sponsor joint science and technology projects. Starting in 2002 the signatories began hosting an annual conference in their respective capital cities by turns.

At the event Li Wang-long, director general of the NSTC’s Department of International Cooperation and Science Education, shared Taiwanese policies such as the Ten AI Initiatives and the Southern Taiwan Silicon Valley Promotion Plan. Sīka elaborated on Latvia’s goals of developing digital information and smart technologies, and said she hoped to enhance trilateral cooperation on artificial intelligence. Taparauskienė introduced Lithuania’s measures to balance developments across the board and promote a higher education system that creates value at the international level.

The NSTC said that Taiwanese delegates visited the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science, Latvian Mobile Telephone, and the Riga office of U.S.-based drone manufacturer Edge Autonomy, and met with Tālis Juhna, rector of Riga Technical University. (YCH-E)
