A series of literature events kicked off March 29 in Germany as part of ongoing outreach by the Ministry of Culture to promote Taiwan’s literary landscape to the global audience.
According to the MOC, the event features novelist Kevin Chen, who has lived in Berlin for more than 20 years. Based on his keen observations of the German capital’s people and culture, Chen’s “Rebellious Berlin” and “Berlin Rebels” serve as cultural guides for Taiwanese readers. The ongoing event focuses on his 2019 novel “Ghost Town,” whose German edition was released March 20, in addition to translations in more than 10 other languages.
Having taken part in the Leipzig Book Fair March 27-30, Chen is set to present the novel April 3 at the Buchhandlung ocelot, a popular bookstore in Berlin, and attend a workshop the following day at the Taipei Representative Office in Germany. He will then embark on a tour in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf to share his personal experiences as a writer.
Taiwan’s Rep. Shieh Jhy-wey described the publication of “Ghost Town” in German as a significant achievement for the author. As a show of support, the upcoming workshop will also offer Taiwan cuisine to engage German readers, he added.
The representative office said that with rising geopolitical tension, the situation in the Taiwan Strait is becoming more apparent to German society, which as a result is showing more interest in German editions of literary work from Taiwan such as “Son of Formosa” and “Before We Were Monsters.” (SFC-E)
