The Ministry of Culture’s Taiwan Cultural Center in Japan launched the “Colorful Diversity in Taiwan Manga” exhibition Aug. 22 in Tokyo, showcasing the breadth and depth of Taiwan’s creative power.

The exhibition features works by comic artists Ruan Guang-min, Zuo Hsuan and Kasaka, the MOC said. Chou Hsueh-yu, deputy representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan, and veteran manga artist Machiko Satonaka also attended the opening.

Speaking at the event, Chou said 21 works were selected for the show, focusing on themes such as ethnicity, gender and human rights. He expressed hope the exhibition would deepen cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan, according to the ministry.

Ruan described manga as a global language and emphasized the diversity and inclusion incorporated into works from Taiwan. Satonaka praised the warmth conveyed through Taiwan comics’ dialogue, characters and storytelling, adding that she hopes more Japanese readers will engage with the works.

In recent years Taiwan creators have received two gold, nine silver and 21 bronze prizes at Japan’s International Manga Award. Ruan and Zuo have each won one silver award, the MOC said.

Kasaka joined Japanese manga artist Sakura Sawa Aug. 23 for a talk on the creative process at Junkudo bookstore in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro commercial and entertainment district. The exhibition runs through Sept. 26. (POC-E)
