Taiwan new media artists feature at Spanish festival

An exhibition titled “Pixel Gods: Digital Taiwan” kicks off Sept. 19 at Matadero Madrid in Spain, showcasing diverse art programs in which the country’s artists combine contemporary art forms with the latest production techniques.

Organized by the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative office in Spain and the curators of the well-known Spanish L.E.V. Festival, the event runs until Oct. 13 and features work by Taiwan artists and groups Ku Kuang-yi, Simple Noodle Art and Team9, as well as a piece jointly created by Huang Hsin-chien of Taiwan and Jean-Michel Jarre of France.

Ku is famous for combining art and technology, and his works often focus on reflection of the relationship between individuals and the environment, the Ministry of Culture said. The artist worked with climate change experts for his multiscreen video “Gods of Water,” which explores potential human responses to disasters such as flooding and rising sea levels, the ministry added.

According to the MOC, Simple Noodle Art uses varied media to explore technology’s impact on people’s daily lives, as evidenced by their video installation “How to Improve Photo Quality by AI.” The ministry described “Words Game” by Team9 as another highlight. The interactive project uses traditional Chinese characters as the building blocks of a video game environment to induce viewers to contemplate the interplay between language, writing and communication.

“The Eye and I,” on display Sept. 19-22, is the work of the Taiwan-France team, the MOC said, adding that the artists explore the ethical issue of surveillance through an interactive virtual reality jail.

Chang Yu-hsuan, director of the cultural division of the TRO in Spain, said digital artists from Taiwan have attracted global attention in recent years, adding that the exhibition is expected to boost cooperative projects and international exchanges. (YCH-E)
