The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends sincere condolences on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan to Myanmar and Thailand following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that hit central Myanmar March 28.
The MOFA also offered Taiwan’s sympathies via social media posts and said that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Myanmar has set up a single contact window to coordinate all matters related to the temblor.
Taiwan’s representative offices in the two nations are keeping a close eye on the situation to help its citizens who might be affected by the disaster, the MOFA said, urging those traveling or living in the two countries to stay on high alert. News reports show that the earthquake has caused more than 1,700 deaths in Myanmar and many remained missing.
The Ministry of Education is offering psychological counseling and other support to the nearly 5,000 Myanmar and Thai students studying in Taiwan. The Overseas Community Affairs Council said it will provide assistance if the students need to return home, and will help arrange financial aid for those whose families are affected by the disaster.
The MOFA said in line with the “Taiwan Can Help” spirit, the government will work closely with the private sector to help facilitate reconstruction in Myanmar and Thailand so that people can return to their normal lives as soon as possible. (SFC-E)
