Four films from Taiwan entered in the Geneva International Film Festival demonstrated their provenance from a vibrant film production landscape, according to the Ministry of Culture’s Paris-located Taiwan Culture Center.
“The Island of Shells” is a virtual reality documentary jointly produced by Taiwan, France and Denmark and directed by Chang Hao-yuan, Ko Chia-wen and Wei Shiue-ying. Making its world premiere at the festival, the film was selected in the GIFF’s Territoires Virtuels section.
It was inspired by White Terror era political prisoner Fred Chin’s witness testimony and intertwines historical scenes with the fable of a boy’s journey, using visual imagery drawn from Southeast Asian traditions of shadow puppetry and shell painting.
“Tabloid” is a TV drama about an investigative journalism exposé of a sex and drugs scandal in the entertainment industry by an undercover reporter. The TV series was short-listed for the International Series Competition.
The MOC said Christa Chen, producer of “The Island of Shells,” and Chen Yu-li, producer of “Tabloid,” both attended the GIFF in person to share their experiences, answer questions from the audience and engage with filmmakers.
According to the ministry, the other two films were “La Magie Opéra,” a Taiwan-France production short-listed for the GIFF’s International Immersive Experience Competition; and “Blur,” an extended reality piece jointly produced by Taiwan, Canada and Greece and featured at the festival’s Immersive Connect Sessions. The event was held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 9 in Geneva, Switzerland. (SFC-E)
