The Ministry of Culture announced Feb. 18 that Taiwan movie, “Who’ll Stop the Rain” had its Australian premiere at the Queer Screen's 31st Mardi Gras Film Festival, held in Sydney.
Launched in 1993, QSMGFF is one of the top five queer film festivals globally and the movie is the only film from Taiwan in this year's festival. The love story is set in the post-martial law era in Taipei City with two female protagonists.
Speaking at the Q&A session following the Feb. 17 screening, director Su I-hsuan said the title of the film comes from an anti-war anthem by the U.S. rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, and the film is set in the plum rain season of 1994. Rain is an element which is beyond human control, but people can decide how to live with it, Su said.
Subsidized by the MOC, “Who’ll Stop the Rain” won an award at the Taipei Film Festival soon after its release and was shortlisted in the 2023 Golden Horse Awards, the 2023 Tokyo International Film Festival, and the 2024 International Film Festival Rotterdam. It is set to join the 38th BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival in March. (POC-E)
