A workshop on incorporating blue carbon ecosystems into climate policies is taking place Oct. 15-16 in Taipei City through the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, underscoring government commitment to enhancing regional climate resilience.
The event, titled “Capacity Building on Integrating Coastal Blue Carbon Ecosystems into Climate Policies in the APEC Region,” was organized by the Ocean Affairs Council and involved representatives from academia, business, government agencies and nongovernmental organizations in the region.
OAC Minister Kuan Bi-ling gave opening remarks in which she said the council is promoting blue carbon as a major natural carbon sink to achieve Taiwan’s policy goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. This vision is in line with the government’s National Ocean Policy White Paper that highlights the ocean’s role in addressing climate change.
She noted that the Ministry of Environment’s approval in July of methodologies for mangrove planting and seagrass restoration under Taiwan’s greenhouse gas reduction framework was an important milestone, adding that the government is committed to working with regional partners to advance marine resilience and sustainable development while contributing to global marine governance.
According to the OAC, the workshop’s first day featured three panel discussions on integrating science and policy for blue carbon ecosystems, blue carbon markets and pricing mechanisms, and enhancing inclusive participation in blue carbon ecosystems.
A guided tour of the Danshui River Mangrove Nature Reserve in New Taipei City is planned for the following day, as is a roundtable meeting on the involvement of the private sector in the sustainable marine environment, the OAC added. (SFC-E)
