The Ministry of Agriculture held a workshop on best practices and innovations in circular agriculture through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Sept. 23-25 in Kaohsiung City, highlighting government commitment to jointly advancing food security and sustainability in the region and internationally.
 
The three-day event, subsidized by the APEC Secretariat, drew around 100 academic, governmental and industrial representatives from 16 member economies, including China, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, the ministry said.
 
Juang Lao-dar, director-general of the MOA’s Department of Resources Sustainability, opened the workshop with a keynote speech on some of Taiwan’s successful projects to achieve zero waste. Other topics discussed on the same day included trends, prospects and innovations in circular agriculture, net-zero decarbonization in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and livestock, and policies, strategies and survey findings as presented by attendees, the MOA added.
 
Sept. 24 saw Dong Hongmin, professor from China’s Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, presented the current status and technical strategies for green and low-carbon development in  livestock industry, the ministry said, adding that other topics on the second day’s agenda encompassed business models and market prospects for carbon reduction.
 
The MOA arranged a field trip to the Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station for workshop attendees Sept. 25. Participants gained insight into applications of recycled feed, the ministry said. (POC-E)
