An international workshop on building a resilient energy future kicked off Nov. 12 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The event, hosted through the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, is a joint project of the MOEA, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, American Institute in Taiwan, Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Australian Office, Taipei, and Canadian Trade Office in Taipei. Around 110 academics, business representatives and officials from 20 countries are taking part in the three-day workshop.
MOEA Minister Kung Ming-hsin said in his opening remarks that, given the challenges stemming from climate change, geopolitics and supply chain restructuring, countries around the world need to ensure energy supply stability while promoting carbon emission reductions.
Citing Taiwan as an example, Kung said the government is promoting diverse green energy development and energy efficiency, as well as strengthening smart grid and energy saving system development to enhance energy resilience and security.
Kung praised the GCTF as an important platform for Taiwan and like-minded partners to address global issues and enhance capacity building, adding that he expected the workshop to fast-track energy transition in the Asia-Pacific by advancing cooperation and experience sharing.
Another highlight of the event was British Office Taipei Rep. Ruth Bradley-Jones’ announcement that the U.K. would be joining the GCTF as a full member after taking part in many workshops over recent years.
The U.K.’s formal accession to the framework was warmly welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung, who said the decision demonstrates international recognition of Taiwan’s proactive contributions to solving global issues, according to the MOFA. (SFC-E)
